707-019 Duratec Styroshield Primer - 1 Gal
Description
707-019 Duratec Styroshield Primer – 1 Gallon
Duratec® 707-019 Styroshield Primer is a specialized air-cure polyester primer formulated to be applied directly to polystyrene foam (Styrofoam®). Once cured, Styroshield creates a tough barrier that protects the foam and allows the use of conventional polyester laminating resins, tooling putties, and other Duratec products without attacking or melting the foam.
Styroshield Primer is the ideal choice for making patterns and molds from low-cost polystyrene foam, for mold-direct construction, and for anchoring decorative paints or coatings onto EPS foam. It is also excellent for sealing foam forms used for cast concrete and for protecting architectural foam fixtures. The primer contains microspheres that help insulate polystyrene foam and allow it to be used as a cost-effective substitute for urethane foam.
Key Features & Benefits
- Foam-safe barrier coat: protects polystyrene (Styrofoam®) from attack by polyester resins and putties.
- Air-cure polyester system: convenient cure at ambient temperature with no oven required.
- Microsphere-filled formula: improves insulation, stiffness, and surface integrity of foam patterns.
- Versatile applications: ideal for prototype molds, foam patterns, architectural foam shapes, and concrete casting forms.
- Excellent adhesion: provides a solid base for laminating, fairing, or painting over polystyrene foam.
- Sprayable primer: designed for use with HVLP spray systems or dump guns for fast coverage.
Typical Uses
- Creating patterns and tooling directly from low-cost polystyrene foam.
- Building prototype or one-off molds with foam core and polyester laminates.
- Sealing foam shapes used for decorative architectural components.
- Coating foam forms for cast concrete or display structures.
Mixing & Application Notes
- Requires MEKP 925 or comparable catalyst at approximately 2% by weight (about 15 cc per quart or liter).
- Mix thoroughly using a drill-mounted mixer or paint shaker until fully blended.
- Apply with HVLP spray system or dump gun; a 2.5 mm (0.100") or larger tip is recommended.
- Microspheres will float to the top and form a crust; simply remix into the primer before use.
- For best storage, keep the container upside down when possible.
- Topcoat or laminate over Styroshield when the surface has a slight tack and no coating transfers to the finger.
