Description

Carbon Fiber Fabric — 5-Harness Satin (5HS) · 6k · 10.9oz (≈369gsm) · Integrated Thermoplastic Yarns · 50" Width

This specialty carbon cloth combines a 6k 5-Harness Satin (5HS) construction with select thermoplastic binder yarns interlaced into the fabric. The satin architecture delivers excellent drape for complex molds, while the binder yarns add pre-form stability and toughness once consolidated. At 10.9 oz (≈369 gsm), it lays down smoothly and builds laminate thickness efficiently for structural and cosmetic parts.

Why this fabric

  • 5HS drape & finish: Satin weave conforms to tight radii and yields a refined surface that’s easy to finish.
  • Thermoplastic yarn integration: Low-melt binder yarns help reduce fray, improve handling, and allow light heat-tacking during preform or tool loading.
  • Enhanced damage tolerance: Thermoplastic interlayers can improve impact response and edge stability compared with all-carbon fabrics of similar weight.
  • Versatile processing: Suitable for wet layup, vacuum bagging, autoclave, OOA consolidation, and infusion. Epoxy is recommended; compatible with vinyl-ester and polyester systems.

Typical applications

Cosmetic skins and structural plies in automotive and motorsports parts, marine components, UAV/RC structures, sporting goods, industrial panels, and hybrid carbon/thermoplastic concepts that benefit from improved handling and toughness.

Technical details

  • Fiber: Carbon Fiber, 6k tow
  • Weave: 5-Harness Satin (5HS) with integrated thermoplastic binder yarns
  • Areal Weight: 10.9 oz (≈369 gsm)
  • Nominal Width: 50 in (1270 mm)
  • Resin Compatibility: Epoxy (preferred); also compatible with vinyl-ester & polyester

Processing notes

  • Binder yarns can be lightly heat-activated (e.g., heat gun, warm platen) to stabilize preforms before full cure.
  • For best fiber volume fraction and cosmetics, use vacuum bagging or infusion. Post-finish with a UV-stable clear coat for exterior use.
  • As with all composites, use appropriate PPE when cutting, sanding, or machining.

Sold by the linear yard (36" length x 50" width) Multiple yardages will be rolled on one continuous roll when possible.
