Description

Description

Carbon Fiber Fabric — Unidirectional (UD) · Hexcel IM2 Intermediate Modulus · 12k · 8.85oz (≈300gsm)

This unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber uses Hexcel IM2 intermediate-modulus 12k yarn to deliver excellent axial stiffness and strength at a moderate areal weight. Fibers are aligned in the 0°/warp direction and lightly stitched to maintain bundle integrity and clean handling during cutting and layup. IM2 yarns are finer than conventional standard-modulus 12k and visually resemble a 6k yarn while offering a significant increase in tensile strength at lower weight—ideal for high-performance spar caps, stringers, and structural reinforcements.

Highlights

  • Intermediate-modulus Hexcel IM2: Higher tensile strength and stiffness than standard-modulus carbon.
  • True UD construction: Maximum properties in the 0° direction for cap and beam applications.
  • 8.85 oz (≈300 gsm): Balanced weight for strength-critical laminates without excess mass.
  • Clean handling: Light stitch binder reduces fray and keeps fibers aligned during layup.
  • Multiple widths available: 2", 3", 4", 6", 12", 25", and 50" (availability may vary).
  • Process-friendly: Works with epoxy (recommended), vinyl-ester, and polyester systems.

Typical applications

Spar caps and stringers (aerospace/RPV/RC), marine foils and masts, motorsport chassis and control arms, ski/board cores, bike components, tubes and beams, and local axial reinforcement of composite panels. Combine with ±45° and 90° plies for balanced layups and shear control.

Technical data

  • Fiber: Hexcel IM2, intermediate-modulus carbon, 12k tow
  • Construction: Unidirectional (0°/warp) with light cross-stitch binder
  • Areal weight: 8.85 oz (≈300 gsm)
  • Nominal thickness: application-dependent (typical UD ≈0.015–0.020" per ply)
  • Available widths: 2", 3", 4", 6", 12", 25", 50"
  • Resin compatibility: Epoxy (preferred), vinyl-ester, polyester
  • Processing: Wet layup, vacuum bagging, VARTM/resin infusion

Processing tips

  • Orient the UD along the primary load path (0°). Add ±45° and 90° plies to control shear and transverse properties.
  • Consolidate under vacuum for optimum fiber-volume fraction and surface finish.
  • Trim with a sharp blade; the light stitch minimizes fraying while maintaining fiber alignment.

Sold by the linear yard (36" length x 50" width) Multiple yardages will be rolled on one continuous roll when possible.
