Carbon Fiber Fabric Unidirectional Intermediate Modulus 12k 5.7oz/193gsm Hexcel IM2
Description
Description
Carbon Fiber Fabric — Unidirectional (UD) · Intermediate Modulus IM2 · 12k · 5.7oz (≈193gsm) · Hexcel®
This unidirectional (UD) carbon fabric is produced with Hexcel® IM2 intermediate-modulus 12k fibers. The fibers are concentrated in the 0° (warp) direction and lightly stitched/bound in the cross direction for easy handling during cutting and layup. At just 5.7 oz (≈193 gsm), IM2 provides an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio with a visual appearance similar to a fine 6k yarn thanks to its smaller filament bundle. Available in multiple ribbon widths and full-width rolls (see options).
Why you’ll like it
- Intermediate-modulus performance: Higher tensile properties than standard-modulus 12k, ideal for weight-critical designs.
- True UD efficiency: Maximizes stiffness and strength along the primary 0° load path.
- Clean handling: Stable binder yarns minimize fray and make placement straightforward.
- Process-friendly: Compatible with epoxy (recommended), as well as vinyl-ester and polyester systems; suitable for wet layup, vacuum bagging, and infusion.
Typical applications
Spar caps and stringers, UAV/RC wings, marine foils and paddles, cycling and boardsport laminates, high-performance panels, tubes, and beams. Combine with ±45° and 90° plies to tune shear and transverse properties.
Technical details
- Fiber: Hexcel® IM2 (intermediate-modulus), 12k tow
- Construction: Unidirectional (0° warp fibers with light binder in weft)
- Areal weight: 5.7 oz (≈193 gsm)
- Appearance: Finer visual similar to 6k due to smaller bundle size
- Available widths: 1.5", 1", 2", 3", 4", 6", 12", 24", and 50" (select options for current availability)
- Resin compatibility: Epoxy (preferred), vinyl-ester, polyester
Processing tips
- Align UD fibers with the main load direction (0°). Add ±45° and/or 90° layers for shear and cross-ply support.
- Use vacuum consolidation for best fiber-volume fraction and surface quality.
- For cosmetic parts, seal and finish with a UV-stable clear coat or paint system.
Sold by the linear yard (36" length x selected widths) Multiple yardages will be rolled on one continuous roll when possible.
